Cold Storage Facility Power

KITRAC Engineering Solutions designed and installed the dedicated electrical power infrastructure for a new cold storage facility in Changamwe serving the Port of Mombasa's logistics chain. Cold storage operations are among the most power-intensive and reliability-critical environments — any supply interruption risks significant perishable cargo losses — so the client demanded a dual-feed incoming supply with automatic bus-tie and N+1 generator redundancy.

KITRAC installed a 630A dual-feed LV switchboard with motorised bus-tie coupler, allowing seamless changeover between two independent Kenya Power supplies. A 320 kVA prime-rated generator was integrated as the third supply source. Refrigeration plant circuits were wired with 4mm² minimum cross-section and individual MCB protection per compressor unit to allow selective maintenance without affecting the broader cold store operation.

The project also included specialist earthing for the refrigeration compressor plant to prevent electrolytic corrosion on refrigerant pipework, full LED lighting in all cold store chambers with IP65-rated fittings rated for -25°C operation, and heat trace circuits on the door seals. KITRAC completed all work in 14 weeks and the facility passed its food-grade compliance audit on first attempt.

Key Deliverables

630A dual-feed LV switchboard with motorised bus-tie — any single Kenya Power feeder fault results in automatic transfer to the healthy supply within 200ms, with no compressor shutdowns.

320 kVA prime-rated generator as tertiary supply, configured to start and synchronise automatically if both mains supplies fail simultaneously — tested monthly under load.

Individual MCB protection for each refrigeration compressor unit, allowing maintenance isolation of a single compressor without disrupting adjacent cold store chambers or the broader facility.

Specialist TN-S earthing system for refrigeration plant, preventing electrolytic corrosion on refrigerant pipework and complying with BS 7671 Section 705 agricultural/food premises requirements.

IP65 LED fittings rated to -25°C throughout cold chambers, heat trace circuits on door seals and drain lines — facility cleared its food-grade compliance audit at first inspection.
